Lincolnshire Day

Saturday 1 October is Lincolnshire Day – a special day to celebrate all things Lincolnshire!

Lincolnshire Day has been celebrated on 1 October every year since 2006. The date was chosen to mark the anniversary of the Lincolnshire Uprising, a revolt by Catholics to King Henry VIII’s plans to establish the Church of England in 1536.

The Lincolnshire flag has a red cross, the Saint George’s Cross, representing England.

The yellow on the flag represents the crops grown in the county, and the nickname ‘Yellow Bellies’. The blue represents the sea on the coast and the wide skies of Lincolnshire. The Green symbolises the county’s lush fields. The Fleur de Lys symbol in the middle is a recognised symbol of the City of Lincoln.

Lincolnshire – our love of great food and drink!

Responsible for growing 30% of the nation’s vegetables, producing 18% of the UK’s poultry, and home of the largest fish processing cluster, it’s no wonder that Lincolnshire’s food and drink is loved by many.

What’s your favourite Lincolnshire food and drink?  Lincolnshire sausages remains top of the menu for dinners across the land, but have you tried Lincolnshire Haslet and Lincolnshire Stuffed Chine?  Here in Grimsby, we love all love Traditional Grimsby Smoked Fish and you can buy this from several of our fish shops including Alfred Enderby and King’s Dish.  Both of these businesses offer smoked fish tours, where you can see and learn this 100-year old process in action.

What about Lincolnshire Plum Loaf? The original recipe was first created in 1901 by Lincolnshire baker, Charles Myers. Delicious with butter, indulge in a slice with a brew (Stokes Tea and Coffee of course) at the cafe at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre.  Some folks like to top their Lincolnshire Plum loaf with cheese, and we love to choose from Lincolnshire Poacher, Cote Hill Yellow Belly and Lymn Bank Cheese.

Lovely Lincolnshire drinks to try include Grimsby’s Docks Beers, Batemans in Wainfleet and Pin Gin in Louth.
