Great Grimsby Charter Day

11th March 2023 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Join us as we mark Great Grimsby Charter Day on Friday 11 March.

The Grimsby borough flag will proudly fly high over Grimsby Town Hall. This year, the flag will be raised at 10am and Mister Mayor will be present.

There will be two exciting exhibitions to visit. The ‘Freemen’s Charter Exhibition‘ at Freeman Street Market will be open to the public, 10am to 4pm. View artefacts, images, online content and an audio exhibit. The exhibition will remain open until Thursday 16 March. Free entry.

A second exhibition will take place in Grimsby Town Hall on Saturday 11 March, 10am to 3pm. Hosted by North East Lincolnshire Archives and Lincs Inspire, the ‘Charters, Crowns & Coronations’ exhibition will include items dating from the Middle Ages to the late 20th century. Sadly, King John’s charter of 1201 does not survive among the borough records, but the charter granted to Grimsby in 1227 by his son, Henry III, has been preserved and will be the centrepiece of the exhibition. Bringing the event right up to date, there will be a display of photographs featuring the future Charles III when he visited Grimsby as Prince of Wales in July 1978. Free entry.

Enjoy free entry to the Time Trap Museum and Town Hall on Saturday 11 March, open 10am to 3pm (last entry at 2.30pm).

Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre will have 10% off entry on Saturday 11 March in honour of Great Grimsby Charter Day.

Take the opportunity to walk the self-guided heritage trail on the Love Exploring app. Learn about Grimsby town centre’s history and the buildings that made it what it is today. The trail starts at Grimsby Town train station. The trail has been created in partnership with the Grimsby, Cleethorpes & District Civic Society. You can download the Love Exploring App to your mobile phone for FREE. There are other heritage trails and fun games for children to do on the app too.
