Wildflowers

The sand dunes that stretch from the Leisure Centre to the county boundary are designated as a Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to their rich flora and fauna and we have some of the best wildflower meadows in Lincolnshire.

The dunes and saltmarsh are valuable source of food for bees, butterflies and moths, such as a Common Blue caterpillar that feeds on Bird’s Foot Trefoil and the incredibly rare Sea Aster Bee that only feeds on Sea Aster in the saltmarsh. They bloom from late spring onwards and a special sight to see is a spectacular display of Southern Marsh, Bee and Pyramidal orchids that are on show in early summer.

The saltmarsh plants extend the flowering period, blooming from mid to late summer, creating purple waves of Sea Lavender and Sea Aster, dotted with pink Sea Milkwort and white English Scurvy Grass.
