Cleethorpes and the Growth of the Tourist Industry – part of Heritage Open Days

Saturday 17 September

10am to 4pm

Join a self-guided trail in and around the surrounding area of Old Clee church with volunteers who will tell you about the church’s history.

Cleethorpes essentially became a tourist destination during the Victorian era and with the coming of the railways in 1863, its future was assured. The facilities for visitors developed from then onward. The Pier and the adjacent cliff gardens came first. The North Promenade with its exciting rides, the side shows and beach entertainment all added to the experience of the visitor, often captured in the Edwardian, comic seaside postcard. Later came the Bathing Pool and the Boating Lake with the first touring caravans pitching up on the golf links!

Please note there is a wedding on at 1pm so the church will be closed in the afternoon, but the trail and surrounding area is still open to the public with volunteers on hand.
No booking required, just turn up. Toilets on site. Partial wheelchair access and disabled toilet available on site.
