Heritage Open Days – Grimsby Minster

17th September 2022 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Free

Discover Grimsby Minster and its long history at the heart of the town centre

10am to 5pm Saturday 17 September

Grimsby Minster, Bethlehem Street, Grimsby

Grimsby Minster has stood in the town for over 900 years. Once called St James church, it was granted Minster status in 2010.  Welcoming all – for worship, for coffee, for peace and reflection, for music and art, and much more – the Minster features in many events that take place in the town, from the annual Christmas event, the graduation ceremony for the University Centre and the annual service of remembrance.

On Saturday 17 September, the Minster looks forwarding to welcoming all to discover its rich heritage and hopefully some may wish to contribute to a new timeline project. The team are  looking to create a timeline of the Minster, past and present, and would like to meet anyone who has stories, memories, pictures and information about the Minster and the surrounding area. Drop in between 10am and 4pm at the St James Centre within the Minster to contribute. Bring along any pictures or mementoes you may have.

Discover the Grimsby Imp:  Visitors to the Grimsby Minster can see if they can spot the Grimsby Imp. It’s thought the imp was sent here from Lincoln, who played naughty tricks and was turned into stone by an Angel.

Walk the Grimsby Heritage Trail:  The Minster forms part of the Grimsby Heritage Trail that can be done through your smartphone on the (free) Love Exploring App. Learn about the history of the Minster whilst you have a look around.  Don’t forget to indulge in a cream tea in the Minster Café who will also be offering picnic cream teas to enjoy outside in the grounds.

Enjoy meeting local makers and artists:   Also on at the Minster that day is a special edition of the OE Makers Market. Meet over 30 local artists and makers, enjoy street foods and yummy treats and listen to mellow musical sounds at this bustling local makers market.  Free entry, it is open 10am to 5pm.

Explore public artwork:  Take the time to explore St James Square. View the murmuration public artwork by local artist Annabel McCourt, created from the outlines of hundreds of volunteer residents. Etched into the pathway in the Square is Come Follow Me, artwork featuring references to Grimsby and its history through quotes, memories, stories and historical text.  Don’t miss checking out the underpass towards Cartergate with its mural of special Grimsby people.
