“Astounding Inventions Down Dock” (re-scheduled date from last month’s Heritage Open Days)

Grimsby Kasbah Conservation Area, Auckland Road, Grimsby

Saturday 22 October
10am-4pm

Join us on the historic port of Grimsby to celebrate the amazing innovations which have propelled us into the future.

Join a fascinating tour or talk, see fish filleting demonstrations with The King’s Dish and take part in the fish auction in the afternoon, see traditional net braiding in action with the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre, have a go at stand up paddleboarding, meet Orsted and gain an insight into the world’s largest offshore wind farm and enjoy street food and entertainment including uplifting sea shanties!

Bookable tours include:

  • A guided walking tour of the historic streets of the Kasbah, 10am, 12 noon, 1pm and 2pm, bookable only
  • Smoke House tour with Alfred Enderby Fish Smokers, 10am, 12noon and 2pm, bookable only
  • The Great Escape tour of Creative Start including the Paint the Town Proud artwork exhibition, 11am, 1pm and 3pm, bookable only
  • Join Heritage Lincolnshire for a talk about historic building conservation and the work being done at Petersons and Building 89. Talks will be held at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm and are bookable only.

In addition to booked activities, come along any time between 10am and 4pm for:

  • Fish filleting demonstrations from The King’s Dish at 11am and 2pm, with the filleted fish auctioned off at 2pm and the proceeds going to the Fisherman’s Mission
  • View two fabulous historic motor vehicles and hear all about when and where they were used
  • Exhibition of Grimsby Docks artworks at the Black Gull café, Auckland Rd
  • Have a go at net braiding with the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre Trawler guides
  • Ebb and Flo Paddle boarding demonstrations – have a go yourself! This isn’t out in the dock so no need to bring your cozzy, the board is mounted on a training platform
  • Celebrate a century of industrial innovation in Grimsby Ice Factory and the pioneering future of the Kasbah’s reborn smokehouses with Great Grimsby Ice Factory Trust
  • Find out more about the work of Grimsby, Cleethorpes & District Civic Society, including their exciting programme of talks
  • Orsted will be providing an insight into the world’s largest offshore wind farm, that is maintained right here out of Grimsby.
  • Sing along to some uplifting sea shanties and other music from local musicians
  • Find out more about the vital work that the Fisherman’s Mission do and how you can support them
  • Visit the Peterson’s Project Exhibition on Wharncliffe Road to find out more about the conservation work underway, and to record your memories of the Docks

 

Food and Drink:

If you’re feeling peckish or need to refuel with a hot cup of tea or coffee (or a cold drink if we’re lucky enough to have a sunny day), pop into the Black Gull café on Auckland Road, or treat yourself to some yummy street food, including: smoked fishcake sandwiches from Alfred Enderby’s RoRo boat, sushi and pizza and other street food from Cooky Cooks.

 

Parking and Transport:

Free parking will be available along the pontoon on Auckland Road – stewards will help you to get parked safely on the day.

If you are travelling by public transport, bus numbers 3, 9 and 10 stop nearby on Cleethorpe Road.
